The history of the lever espresso machine starts with Gaggia. The company was founded in 1948. Before the founding Achille Gaggia was the first person who registered the patent for a piston driven lever brewing group. The company itself was founded in 1948
The first production model lever espresso machine which Gaggia produced was the Gaggia Classica. After this various commercial espresso machinemodels followed like the Gaggia Esportazione, Gaggia TS. Gaggia Spagna, Gaggia Internazionale and in the late 50ies the iconic Gaggia America. In the 60ies they produced models like the Gaggia Orione. The traditional lever group did also change a couple of times technically, but the principle was the same.
In the early 50ies Gaggia also developed the first lever espresso machine for domestic use, the Gaggia Gila.
The Gaggia company still exists today, they still produce commercial and domestic espresso machines. But they discontinued the production of lever espresso machines.
